Without storage, a typical household uses only 30 to 50 percent of the electricity its panels generate. The rest is exported to the grid while you are out, then in the evening you buy electricity back at full price. What does battery storage cost?

Typical installed prices range from 2,500 to 4,000 pounds for a small battery (3 to 5 kWh), 4,000 to 6,500 pounds for the 5 to 10 kWh size that suits most 3-bed homes, and more for larger capacities. Crucially, battery storage installed with or alongside solar panels qualifies for 0% VAT, the same as the panels themselves.

A day with solar and battery storage

The easiest way to see the value is to follow the energy through a typical day:

  • Morning: the panels wake with the daylight. The house runs on solar, and once the kettle and showers are done, the surplus starts filling the battery instead of draining to the grid.
  • Midday: generation peaks while the house is quiet. The battery reaches full charge and any further surplus is exported for Smart Export Guarantee payments.
  • Evening: cooking, heating, lights and television all draw from the battery rather than the grid, through the hours when electricity is most expensive.
  • Overnight: on a time-of-use tariff, the battery can top up at the cheapest off-peak rate, ready to cover the morning peak before the sun takes over again.

The result is a household that buys very little peak-rate electricity at all, which is where the up to 70 percent bill reduction comes from.

Honesty matters more than an upsell. If you are home most of the day and already use most of your generation directly, or if your budget is better spent on a larger panel array first, starting with solar alone is a perfectly sound decision. Common questions

How long do home batteries last?

Most home batteries carry manufacturer warranties of 10 to 12 years and are rated for thousands of charge cycles. A well-maintained system can keep performing for 15 years or more.

Will a battery power my home in a power cut?

It depends on the system. Some batteries include backup functionality as standard and others offer it as an add-on. If backup power matters to you, tell us at the survey stage and we will recommend the right setup.

Can I add a battery to panels I already own?

Yes, in most cases. We regularly retrofit batteries to existing solar installations across the North West, whether or not we fitted the original panels. We check your inverter compatibility and recommend either an AC-coupled battery or a hybrid inverter upgrade.
